John is a Green Room Award-winning director, writer, producer and script developer who works internationally in theatre, opera and screen. He is a skilled public communicator, teacher and mentor with extensive experience delivering drama and English workshops across the country as well as teaching at major drama schools like RSCCD, LAMDA, VCA, NIDA & Monash. John is currently the Literary Manager of Australian Plays and was formerly Director In Residence for Bell Shakespeare.

John is on Film Victoria’s Key Talent Register, the Australian Writer’s Guild’s Pathways programme and has an Advanced Diploma in Script Editing & Development from AFTRS. He was formerly Co-Creative Director and CEO of multi-Green Room Award winning MKA: Theatre of New Writing. John holds an MA (Advanced Theatre Practice) from the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama (RCSSD) and originally trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA).

John was a member of the Australia Council’s 2015 Emerging Leaders Development Programme and the inaugural Melbourne Lincoln Centre Director’s Lab. He spent 2007-2012 working with leading new writing theatres in London where he co-founded IronBark – producing the best Australian writing for UK audiences.

John has collaborated with writers like Angus Cameron, Emilie Collyer, Ben Ellis, Julian Larnach, Caleb Lewis, Ross Mueller, Kate Mulvany, John Romeril, Lou Sanz and Alana Valentine. His directing credits include; in Australia; Melbourne Theatre Company, Lightning Jar Theatre, Bell Shakespeare, Red Stitch, Vessel Arts, Lab Kelpie, MKA, Lyric Opera, ATYP/Under The Wharf and Darlinghurst Theatre and in the UK; IronBark, Finborough Theatre, OVNV/Old Vic, NYTGB, Soho Upstairs, Edinburgh Fringe and Old Red Lion.
